Critical Update for the 716 Exchange

In 2022, the federal government will launch a new 3 digit hotline for suicide prevention. The number will be 988 and like 911, it will provide instant access to those in need. Click here for the original FCC release

Due to the way that phone numbers work in the United States, every locality which has a 988 prefix will need add the area code to the prefix to complete calls. For example, 988-0000 will be serviced by dialing 716-988-0000.

The new hotline won't be working until July 16th, 2022. Until then, the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is still 1-800-273-8255 (TALK). On April 1st, 2021, callers in all areas that will be affected by this change can start dialing the 10 digit numbers. In October this will be mandatory as your call will not be completed.

This Lifeline supports many in times of crisis.

The 716 exchange was created to meet the needs of Western New York creators and businesses owner find patrons. It was not intended for such serious matters. However, now that there is a need to provide information nationally, I have decided to post this information to assist this critical change.
